First Call for papers EuroSLA 30, 2020

We are inviting proposals for presentations at EuroSLA 30 to be held in Barcelona, Spain, July 1-4, 2020.  We welcome submissions in all areas and approaches to the study of learning second, foreign, or additional languages.

Academic program
The academic program will include presentations by the participants as well as four invited keynote speakers:

Nick Ellis (University of Michigan, USA)

Judit Kormos (Lancaster University, UK)

Rosa Manchón (Universidad de Murcia, Spain)

Kazuya Saito (University College London, UK)

The conference will also offer a doctoral student workshop and a Language Learning Roundtable (topic: ‘Multimodal input and second language acquisition’, pending approval by LL).

Types of presentations

1) Individual papers: length of presentation: 20 mins followed by 5 mins for Q&A.
2) Colloquia: a maximum of three colloquia will be accepted. Each colloquium may contain three or five thematically related papers (the colloquium is therefore either 90 or 150 minutes long, depending on the number of papers). The colloquium convener must submit a colloquium abstract that should describe the topic of the colloquium. This will be used by reviewers to assess the range and coherence of the papers. Individual presenters submit individual papers but mark them as part of a named colloquium.

Please note it is a requirement for a colloquium to be accepted that all included papers are accepted. If the colloquium is rejected, individual papers may still be accepted as papers in parallel sessions. Please also note that there is no time assigned for a discussant.

3) Posters. A0, portrait.
4) Papers at the doctoral student workshop. Length of presentation: 15 minutes of talk by the doctoral student followed by 15 minutes for discussion. The doctoral student workshop aims at fostering discussions of ongoing PhD research, as well as at obtaining feedback from senior researchers and other doctoral students. These workshops provide an opportunity for PhD students to present and discuss their work (15 minutes) and explore future directions (15 minutes). Doctoral students whose abstracts are accepted are required to send their abstract, presentation, and these will be then sent to the discussant. The discussant will lead a 15 minute feedback/discussion session of the PhD work.

For the first time this year, all papers accepted for doctoral workshops will be eligible for the Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism award for best doctoral project (more detailed information to come soon).
Abstract submission information
The submission of presentation proposals opens on November 10, 2019, and closes on December 31, 2019.

Submit the proposals online here.

The proposals for all presentations will be evaluated anonymously by at least three members of the EuroSLA 30 Scientific Committee. Evaluation criteria include: quality of the content, clarity of the abstract, the contribution to the field, and thematic relevance. For colloquia, two additional assessment criteria are the range and the coherence of the papers.

Doctoral students submitting abstracts for doctoral workshops must include a limited number of specific questions for the discussants.
Notification of acceptance is to be communicated by the end of March 2020.
Length of abstracts

Individual paper, paper at the doctoral student workshop, or poster: max. 600 words including references

Colloquium, general abstract: a maximum of 400 words including references.

Language policy
The working language of the conference is English but presentations are also welcome in other European languages.

Presenter policy

Each participant can appear as the first author on one presentation only. A colloquium convener can also present at the colloquium or elsewhere in the program.
